Second week!

Hello everyone,

We have completed our first full week of music in grades 4,5 and 6. Here is what we did:

Grade 4

We continue to work on both playing the ukulele and learning about different instruments in class. Students learned about keyboard instruments and created a labeled poster about a choice of keyboard instrument. We reviewed the C major chord on the ukulele and also learned F major and started with the G major chord. Students discovered that these chords can be used in many songs and we started to sing and play 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight' by The Tokens.

Grade 5

In a big moment, the grade 5s played their instruments together for the first time! This week we have just concentrated on music theory and creating a sound on ourinstruments, but also practiced making sounds in both 4 beat and 3 beat patterns, which students should practice at home. Next week we will start work from our musical excercise book and I will post the music here on the blog as necessary.

Grade 6

The grade 6s have also been focussing on music theory and practicing together as the band, especially with a number of new additions to the band this year. All grade 6 students have now received their instruments and can take them home to practice at any time.We will continue working on different musical excercises next week and will continue to focus on technique and creating good tone on our instruments.

Have a great weekend everyone, looking forward to another musical week next week!

Mr. Oliver

They should continue practicing their instrument over March Break, focusing on excercises 16, 17, and the notes from excercises 19 and 21. We can now play the chords C,F,G, Aminor and E minor and were able to play the first verse and chorus of 'Somewhere over the Rainbow'. After March break we will begin our preparations for Arts Night. Have a great March Break everyone! Mr. Oliver

Grade 6s have been emersed in the music of the maritimes and have been learning about the meaning of 'Northwest Passage' and 'I'se the B'y. Have a great weekend! Mr. Oliver
