Welcome!

Welcome all.

My name is Mr. Oliver, and I am thrilled to be back for my 4th year at St. Jude’s Academy as the Head of Arts, teaching grade 4,5,6,7 and 8. I have had a very busy summer full of fun events and I can’t wait to hear about all of the things you did this summer as well! It is going to be a great school year, and I am very excited for it to begin!

Units and Collaboration:

Music for Grade 4 this year will include continuing working on playing Ukulele with students learning a Band instrument in grade 5 and 6. We will be preparing for the Christmas Concert and Arts Night and hope to create an even more magical performance than we did last year!

We will also be collaborating with classroom teachers to be able to connect the students learning throughout subjects. In grade 4 we will be working together on Arts Night preparations, will explore coding in music in grade 5, and I am looking forward to working again with the grade 6s on the arts component of their 'Exhibition' final project.

Below are a few items which require your attention.

·         Orientation Night will be taking place on August 28, 2019. Please check your email for the invitation. If you would like to speak with me about Music for the coming year I will be located in Rm 29!
·         St. Jude’s is strictly a nut free school!
·         Welcome Back Barbeque and Back to School Kick Off will take place on September 19th. Tickets will be sold in the first weeks of school. More information to come.
·         Uniform requirements: Students must use the summer uniform until October 15th
·         Starting in grade 3, students will be bussed to the dome/Wynn Fitness gym facility for all PE classes. Please try to arrive at school on time, as being late puts you at risk of missing the bus for PE.
·         First day of school is September 4, 2019 and promptly starts at 8:45am. School ends at 3:45pm.
·         Parents, if you would like to volunteer in the school or on field trips, you are required to provide a current Vulnerable Sector Check. If this was provided previously (within the last 5 years) you must sign the annual offence declaration form to continue volunteering with our school.

Upcoming Dates and Events:

·         August 28, 2019 – Orientation Night

Hello everyone, Grade 4 this week worked on producing a set of lyrics for a song that they are writing. They learned about rhyming, opposites and association as well as the strcuture of a song, and in groups worked on producing a chorus and two verses. Next week we will learn about melody and harmony. Grade 4s should bring their devices in next week for this. Grade 5 practiced together as the band. We have been working on excercise 16 'Hot Cross Buns' and learned about rests and playing with different rhythms. Grade 6 also practiced togehter as the band but also learned how to perform a traditional aboriginal stick game song, as well as beginning the 'Song for the Swimmers'. Next week we will learn about the music of other explorers and learn an aboriginal dance for Song of the Swimmers. I have attached the two songs we have been learning here: Song for the Swimmers Travelling Stick Game Song
